There are many churches throughout the country which is where the Roman Catholics go to worship. In the 1980s and 90s, Peru experienced extreme internal violent conflict. The Shining Path, a far left guerrilla group, categorized religion and religious leaders as enemies that needed to be persecuted. The Christians refused to cooperate with their violent ideas which to the Shining Path, was a confirmation that they were now enemies. The region of Ayacucho was their main focus because it was a very religious region. 40% of the total number of victims in Peru were from that region. The guerrillas actively attacked religious leaders and killed a large amount of people. They saw religious leaders and people as enemies and started conflicts over religious beliefs in Peru.
